About this condition

The tonsils sit at the back of the throat and can become sore and swollen, making swallowing painful, sometimes with fever. In some people it recurs several times a year.

How a consultation works

The doctor examines the throat and asks how often episodes occur and how they have been treated before. Where an episode looks bacterial, or where it recurs often enough to warrant a specialist opinion, you will be told so directly.
